Bamboo is a grass not a wood, and the bamboo plant grows at a great speed and regrows once harvested, making it the perfect sustainable material for many different uses. It has had so many different uses for over 4000 years. It is flexible and durable, which initially gave it simple uses such the main material for housing, scaffolding for construction, furniture, and musical instruments, but now has been developed for bamboo fibre which can be used for bowls, bicycles, and even socks! The flexibility characteristic of bamboo meant that many of the houses in the Far East built from bamboo have been able to survive earthquakes.
Bamboo’s antibacterial qualities make it perfect for kitchen products such as food preparation and service boards, or cooking utensils.
Previously people were worried that products made from bamboo would split when placed in water, which has been solved with the creation of compressed bamboo, where brick like pieces of bamboo are laminated together to make super hard flooring / food boards / surfaces / pretty much anything….
