If you are unsure about the quality of Saffron you should always test it.

The smell and aroma should be strong and instantly recognisable but to make sure this is not artificial perfume or flavouring, you should prepare for the saffron test:
-A white bowl or plate
-1 teaspoon of baking soda
Dissolve the baking soda in the water and then place a few Saffron strands on top. Instantly the colour is extracted from the Saffron which should be yellow, any dyes or additives would be red (and therefore fake). After 30 minutes the Saffron strands should still be the same original dark red colour (see our Grade A Saffron below after 30 minutes)
